I recently upgraded from a Samsung i760 to the TP2 and, over all, I am quite pleased with the TP2.

However, as I encounter "hot" new apps, almost universally they seem to be coming exclusively for iPhone/Android.

My bank has an app to permit check deposits by phone - iPhone/Android only.
CardStar allows you to scan your loyalty cards/fobs - iPhone/Android only
valPak local coupons - iPhone/Android (and Palm and BB) only
Stanza book reader - iPhone(iPad/iPod) only
GasBuddy - iPhone only

... you get the picture.

Everytime I see an article about the best apps, invariably they are NOT for WinMo.

What's up?

Sadly, there's going to be less and less for our WM platform.  Here: http://www.freewarepocketpc.net/ you'll see the occasional app pop up, but WM as we know it - it's on it's way out.

MS has Windows Phone 7 up it's sleeves and Android is growing by leaps and bounds. And the iphone -well, it's the iphone.

There's still a lot out there, before WM disappears, and there's plenty to keep one busy for a while. At least until we know if the new WP7 is viable, anyways.

The guys at XDA will continue to provide programs and apps for winmo.  No worries at all.  And besides................they're free!

Thanks ... I've been to XDA and, yes, there is a lot of good stuff out there.

Still, I didn't think I'd have to go "underground" to find apps for a Microsoft device.
Really, the only reason I didn't go Android was wanting to sync PC data to my smartphone.
And while the XDA crew deserve applause for their work, I'm looking for more than tweaks and hacks.

Bigger issue -- the looming extinction of the "smart"phone for the "social"(network) phone.

But, given what I'm hearing about cloud computing etc., I may bite the bullet and Googlize my computing.

I hear you.  I'm not a fan of all the Facespacing and social app craze myself.  I speak to my friends and if I don't speak to you it's because I don't want to.  I don't need a digital list of ppl I really don't talk to.  I don't understand the whole thing to be honest.  In my mind, if you're over 30 years of age, you really don't need to be socially networking on myspace with ppl you already have in your contacts list.

Anyway, Microsoft has said that they are not killing winmo 6.5 because of WindowsPhone 7.  They will continue to support business minded customers who prefer a more mature experience.  I don't know how true this is, seeing as the all mighty dollar dictates what will happen, but I do beleive that users who prefer the pocket PC style of phones will still have options for future customers.  We may not have smiley faces that sing - apps., but who the hell wants that anyway?

I heard that too about MS still supporting WM 6.5 - but a lot of the developers have sprung off and went on to Android etc.  Major apps that I paid good money for don't get any further updates and have been abandoned by companies.

I'm really not happy about this!!!!

MarketPlace - that's the none-underground place to download apps that are still being developed. But it's thinning out big time....

Oh ok.  I understand what you mean.  I'm new to Windows  Mobile myself, so I really have no experience or any past knowledge to compare it to.

I really like my new phone so far.  I've had it for 2 months now.  I guess when it's time for a new one (maybe 2 years or when upgrade comes next May), I will get an Android phone.

I have become accustomed to the winmo interface though.  It's only been 2 months, but I navigate this thing like I was born with it.  So it will suck to see it go, but if there are so few apps available when it's time to upgrade then we have no choice I suppose.  I am not ever going to support windowsphone 7.  I read that it wont have storage card support or cutting and pasting function.  Basically it will resemble an iphone generation 1.

I think the main thing is that I need a phone with a good qwerty keyboard like the TP2, and an OS that has a lot of 1st and 3rd party apps.  Right now at XDA and PPC geeks there are a ton of apps to keep me happy.  Like I said though, I don't know how often they're supposed to be released so I can't tell that winmo is lagging right now.  I guess it will be a pleasant surprise if I switch to Android in the future.  I just want an experience that isn't focused around my device using 30Mb of stock RAM for things I don't use like Myspace or Facespace.  I want something similar to what I have now.  A ROM with many things available that allow me to customize the UI and programs that allow me to do whatever I want.

Matter of fact..............I would love for the Touch Pro 2 line of phones to continue.  I love the current model/style of the phone.  I don't need a begger screen or a thin device with no keyboard.  I would love to see the same type of device with upgrades to the processor or minor tweaks.  I really don't think I could acclimate to the phones with on screen keyboards and battery hog screens.  I honestly think the TP 2 is the perfect mix of size and functionality.  It's the "sweet spot" so to speak.  If my phone had a 1Ghz or better processor in it, I would use it for years and years.  Obviously this is not what the manufacturers want, so they feed us a bit atta time with each new gen.  Grrrrrr.

agree Sir,
I see now development was slow or even stops, especially for recently trend made apps like buzz and foursquare, though some still encouraged developers creates them.
